Picking a swim school feels like it should be simple — until you realise there are six within 15 minutes of your house and they all look fine on Google. Here’s how to actually compare them.
Start with qualifications
The most important factor — and one most parents skip past — is whether the teachers are properly qualified. In Australia, look for AUSTSWIM certification or Swim Australia Teacher (SAT) qualifications. Both are nationally recognised and require ongoing development.
Reputable schools display this on their website or in the centre. If you ask and get a vague answer, that’s a major red flag.
Check the class size
Smaller is almost always better. A teacher with eight wriggly four-year-olds simply cannot give the same attention as one with four. Industry guidelines suggest:
- Babies (with parent): up to 8
- Independent preschool: max 4
- School-age beginners: max 6
- Stroke development: up to 8
Visit before you book
This is the single best piece of advice. Most reputable schools welcome a viewing — many offer trial lessons. Visit during the time slot you’d actually attend and look for:
-
Pool temperature: 30–32°C is ideal. Cold pools mean tense, miserable kids.
Air temperature: Should feel warm and humid; standing on the pool deck shouldn’t be uncomfortable.
Water clarity: You should clearly see the bottom.
Smell: A heavy chlorine smell is a sign of poor maintenance, not over-chlorination.
Atmosphere: Are children smiling? Are teachers patient and engaged?
Ask the right questions
Before you sign up, ask:
-
What qualifications do your teachers hold?
What’s your typical class size for [my child’s age]?
How do you assess and track progress?
What’s your make-up lesson policy if we miss?
Do you teach year-round or only in school terms?
Can I observe a class before booking?
Trust your gut
If something feels off — a teacher who seems impatient, a pool that smells wrong, a manager who dodges your questions — listen to that instinct. There are too many great swim schools in Australia to settle for one that gives you the wrong feeling.
Don’t over-optimise
The “perfect” swim school 30 minutes away will lose to the “good” swim school five minutes away every single time. Consistency beats optimisation. The best swim school is the one you’ll actually attend, week in, week out.
